The best white noise machines for sounder sleep and happier mornings.

While pregnancy has me sleeping like well, a baby, I’m sure bedtime won’t be quite so restful once I have a newborn in the house. But I’m still looking to wring all the sleep I can out of early motherhood, with the help of a white noise machine that can drown out the dulcet tones of our neighbors’ yippy dogs and the sirens from the fire department less than half a mile from our house.
So I’ve scoured the market to find the best machines out there, whether you’re looking for portability, a womb-like sound, or nursery decor blendability.

Most portable
If you’re looking for white noise machine that goes with you in the carpool line or to the babysitter’s, check out the Soundbub, which our editor Kate reviewed last year. It clips on to your stroller or crib for easy travel and contains a bluetooth speaker so you can stream your kid’s favorite lullaby album or, you know, that Spawned podcast he’s been meaning to catch up on. Plus it has a pre-recorded white noise if you need to get serious about nap time. Winning.
Best for noisy households
If you don’t want a lot of bells and whistles but do want a machine that’s excellent at masking loud or high-pitched noises (especially for those of you with other kids), the LectroFan is a solid bet. It features 10 different fan sounds and 10 different non-repeating white noise sounds (like static on your TV) that are proven to block out noise.

Most realistic noise
If you’ve been taking cues from Dr. Harvey Kemp’s The Happiest Baby, you’ll want to check out this Baby Shusher, which imitates the natural shushing sound of being inside mom’s womb. While this gadget only makes one sound, you can control the volume and timer. Plus, it’s small enough that you could throw it in the stroller or carseat.
Cutest
This Moonlight & Melodies Nightlight Soother from Skip*Hop is so cute, it looks like it could be in your nursery purely for decorative purposes. Check out the speaker wings! So clever. But turns out it has a ton of options for helping baby drift off to sleep, too. It can project stars and moonlight onto the ceiling or wall, work as a nightlight, and play four melodies and four natural sounds, like jungle sounds, waves, and white noise with a heartbeat for little ones still adjusting to life outside of the womb.
