2 great organizations creating more educational opportunities to kids who need it most.

My mother is an amazing educator, and an activist for great educational opportunities for all kids. So you can imagine a lot of our dinner table conversations. I’ve been thinking a lot about the challenges faced by

While it’s been around since 1963, I’ve just learned about A Better Chance, an organization dedicated to helping more children of color get an outstanding education and assume more positions of leadership. I feel like I should have known about them sooner — but then I thought, I’m probably not the only one who hadn’t heard of them.  If it’s new to you too, here’s why it’s an organization you might consider supporting.

I have to say I’m a staunch public school advocate, but I also recognize a lot of the benefits of private schools of all kinds. And in lots of neighborhoods, the zoned public school may not be the best option for kids. So A Better Chance works with more than 300 top-tier middle and high schools around the country, from Trinity and Brearley in New York, to College Preparatory in Oakland, Harvard-Westlake in LA, the Lab Schools in Chicago, and Germantown Friends in Philly, where I spent a day visiting a friend once while I was in high school and…just, wow.

I like that there’s no fee to apply, and there’s financial aid available for those who can’t afford the testing that might be required.

I still think we should continue to support our nation’s public schools so that even more kids have the best possible chance to succeed in life.

Alumni include company CEOs and presidents, judges, college professors, and authors.

You can apply if you’re a student of color in grades 4-9, have great grades and demonstrate strong leadership skills. See the FAQ for more info.

hat you are talking about is providing kids with similar resources ( time, money, modeling, consistency) that your kids have without even thinking about it. Suppose all kids had access to those resources. Schools would only be one part of the equation.
